Banacek premiered on the NBC on March 20, 1972. Banacek was part of NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie Theatre which rotated several shows, a different one each week. These were Cool Million and Madigan, and was a spin off from Sunday's mystery theatre which had a similar format showing Columbo, McCloud and McMillan and Wife. A couple of these shows went on to get their own time slot, but unfortunately Banacek didn't. Thomas Banacek is a freelance insurance investigator who lives in the ritzy Beacon Hill section of Boston. He gets paid ten percent of the insured value for the stolen object or a million dollars minanum. This occurs whether if he recovers the object or causes it to be found. He has help from a chauffeur who always thinks he has it solved before his boss and an owner of a rare bookshop with a photographic memory. Banacek is a polish name and the character is always spouting polish probverbs. Each episode usually has an object stolen in mysterious way and he has to put together how it was done and presents it at the end in a typical mystery ending where the investigator wraps it all up! The Show was also loosly based on the movie "The Thomas Crown Affair" starring steve McQueen.
