Eco-Challenge: Borneo premiered on USA on April 1, 2001. In the Eco-Challenge each team of four, comprising men and women, races non-stop, 24-hours a day, over a rugged 300-mile (500km) course, using jungle trekking, whitewater kayaking, caving, sea kayaking, scuba diving, mountaineering and mountain biking skills. It's an Expedition Race against time, pitting the dramatic forces of Mother Nature against the skill and experience of world-class adventure athletes. The Eco-Challenge is based on the philosophy that interaction with the environment requires both a knowledge of and respect for the terrain through which the race travels. Each event is designed to have minimum impact on the land and encourages a "leave no trace" philosophy. It is a challenge that transcends physical fitness and the individual; its very essence lies in team dynamics and the ability to solve problems under constant stress, including little sleep and limited food. The race demands mutual respect for others and for the environment, while each individual is pushed to the very edge of human endurance. It is a race measured in pain-endured lessons. If one person quits or is injured, the entire team is disqualified. To succeed is to finish as a team; to win demands something extraordinary.
The Eco-Challenge in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo offers competitors a chance to explore one of the last truly wild places on Earth. With over 2000 species of animals on the island of Borneo, Theme of the 2000 race is Malaysia's wildlife. There are 76 teams, representing 26 countries, competing in jungle trekking, 'coasteering' mountain biking, caving, fixed ropes, paddling in Sampan canoes, sailing and paddling Perahu outrigger canoes, and scuba diving through and on jungle rivers, tropical rainforest, jungle mountains, caves, and pristine ocean.
